Selenium is currently under intense investigation for its effect in the control of HIV and AIDS. Although a trace element, selenium is essential for much of the body’s biochemistry, particularly its effect on the immune system and the highly antioxidant or reducing properties it displays through reducing enzymes it is responsible for producing. AIDS is caused by a deficiency of selenium, glutamine, tryptophan and cysteine, that deficiency being caused by the HIV virus. HIV causes the deficiency because shortages of these substances enable the virus to replicate more effectively.
Selenium, in particular, is responsible for the production of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase that reduces HIV replication through the strong antiretroviral properties it possesses by being an antagonist of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme used by HIV during replication. HIV patients appear avoid AIDS if they take a diet high in these four substances, since that prevents the condition suitable for AIDS development that the HIV virus tries to generate. Many areas of Africa have soils naturally low in selenium and tryptophan, and conditions are ideal for the development of AIDS from HIV.
It is not enough, therefore, for HIV patients to take only a selenium supplement in order to avoid AIDS, but one containing all four: selenium, tryptophan, cysteine and glutamine.
Selenium and all the above mentioned minerals and amino acids are available at your local or internet health food store in capsule or tablet forms. Look for name brands like Kal to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase for consumption.
